Can You Use a Malaysian Government Grant to Pay for Your AI Setup?

2026-03-06

Running a business in Malaysia is expensive. So when the government offers to pay half your digital upgrade bill, you'd want to know about it.

The SME Digitalisation Grant — managed by MDEC and Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) — gives qualifying Malaysian SMEs a 50% matching grant, up to RM5,000, for approved digital tools and services.

That means if you're spending RM5,000 to set up an AI assistant for your business, you could claim back RM2,500. Your actual cost: RM2,500.

Here's what you need to know.

What Is the SME Digitalisation Grant?

It's a joint initiative by the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and BSN. The goal is simple: help Malaysian SMEs adopt digital tools without the full financial burden.

The grant gives you 50% back on qualifying digital spending, capped at RM5,000 per company. It's a one-time claim, not a recurring benefit.

Who Qualifies?

To be eligible, your business must:

  • Be at least 60% Malaysian-owned
  • Have been operating for at least 6 months
  • Have an annual turnover below RM50 million
  • Not have claimed this grant before (it's a one-time entitlement)

Most Malaysian kedai owners, service businesses, and SMEs will qualify.

What's Covered?

The grant covers a range of digital tools, including:

  • Cloud accounting systems (SQL, Xero, AutoCount)
  • eCommerce platforms
  • Digital marketing solutions
  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools
  • POS systems
  • Payroll and HR software

AI assistants and automation tools fall under the digital productivity and CRM category — which means an OpenClaw AI setup could potentially qualify.

How Does It Work?

  1. Choose a registered Digital Service Provider (DSP) — the vendor must be approved by MDEC
  2. Get a quotation from the DSP
  3. Apply online through the BSN/MDEC portal
  4. Get approval, then pay your 50% and submit claim documents
  5. Receive reimbursement of the other 50%

The key step: your provider needs to be a registered DSP. Ask before you commit.

How Much Can You Save?

Here's a simple breakdown:

Total Setup CostYou PayGrant Covers
RM5,000RM2,500RM2,500
RM4,000RM2,000RM2,000
RM3,000RM1,500RM1,500

The grant covers exactly 50%, up to RM5,000 total spend.

What About OpenClaw?

OpenClaw setup is a one-time, done-for-you AI assistant installation. It's a productivity tool that helps Malaysian businesses automate customer replies, draft content, handle admin tasks, and more — running locally on your device, with your data staying private.

Whether an OpenClaw setup qualifies under the grant depends on the DSP registration status of your provider. We recommend checking with MDEC directly or asking your setup provider during the initial consultation.

Other Grants to Know About

The SME DG isn't the only option:

Selangor SME Digitalisation Matching Grant — if your business is registered in Selangor, the state government offers its own 50% matching grant up to RM5,000 for digital tools.

MIDA Smart Automation Grant (SAG) — for manufacturing and selected service businesses, this offers up to RM1 million for automation including AI and software.

HRD Corp (formerly HRDF) — if you're a registered employer, you can claim training costs for your team, including software onboarding sessions.

The Bottom Line

If you've been putting off your AI setup because of the upfront cost, the SME Digitalisation Grant could cut it in half. The application process is manageable, and many digital service providers will help you with the paperwork.

The grant is first-come, first-served and not guaranteed to be available indefinitely. If you qualify, the sooner you move, the better.

A note on DSP registration: We are currently working towards becoming a registered Digital Service Provider (DSP) with MDEC. In the meantime, we're happy to guide you on what the grant covers, whether your business qualifies, and how to find eligible providers — no strings attached.
